If your document is not delivered two weeks after the date the document was processed, you can send a question to us online, call the DMV or visit your local DMV office.

Can you drive by yourself at 16 with a license in California?
Minors’ Driver License Requirements. You must: Be at least 16 years old. Provide parent(s) or guardian(s) signature(s) on your instruction permit certifying that you have completed 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours must be night driving) as outlined in the California Parent-Teen Training Guide (DL 603).
Do you get your license the same day you pass the test?
Your driving test pass certificate. After your test, your examiner will give you your pass certificate. You can use this as evidence that you have passed until you get your photocard driving licence, but you actually don’t even need to carry it with you.

Can you take the written driving test online in California?
In order to get your learner’s permit, you’ll need to take the California DMV written test, which will have 46 questions and you’ll be required to answer 38 correctly to pass. To get a permit, you’ll pay a $33 fee and must take a standard vision test at your local DMV, in addition to the written knowledge test.
Do you need a permit to get a license in California?
If you pass the permit exam and pay the $35 fee, you’ll receive your California learner’s permit. You have 12 months to complete all the required steps toward qualifying for a driver’s license once you have a permit. Even if you’re over the age of 18, you cannot drive alone with only a learner’s permit.

16 years old: Eligible for a provisional license (with completion of driver’s education). 17 1/2 years old: Allowed to apply for a provisional permit without taking driver’s education. 18 years old and older: Allowed to apply for a driver’s license without getting a learner’s permit.
